Student Instructions

Solve this problem. 1/3 of 3/4. Use the rectangle to model how to multiply fractions. Use different colors for each fraction. 1. First, divide the rectangle vertically into 3 equal parts. Stripe 1 of the 3 columns. 2. Next, divide the rectangle horizontally into 4 equal parts. Stripe 3 of the 4 rows. 3. Count up the boxes that contain both colors. That is your numerator. 4. Count up the total number of boxes. That is your denominator. If you did it correctly, you will have 3 out of 12 boxes that contain BOTH colors. Your answer is 3/12 or 1/4. Try one by yourself. Use the second rectangle to model multiplying fractions. 1/2 of 2/3.
