Teachers, save “[SPEAKING] Sportspeople's Second Jobs” to assign it to your class.

“The Gasol Brothers are awesome basketball players, they have great teamwork skills, and are having very successful careers in the US. When they retire they could find a job as basketball coaches, journalists, or even businessmen. They have the right capacities for any of those jobs.”

Student Instructions

The teacher shows photos of retired sportspeople, students have to guess what sports they used to practise and what they do for a living now. Task: (15 min) Students have to write sentences about the rest of the people shown on the pictures in the same way as the teacher previously did. For example: “Charles Barkley was a basketball player, but now he is a TV commentator”, or “Martina Navratilova was a tennis player, but now she is a coach.” The teacher explains how to talk about jobs and professions there needs to be the word “a/an” before the actual job, like in “He is a teacher” or “She is an animator”. Students need to pay attention to the use of “a” vs. that of “an” and the reasons to use each of them. Students team up and discuss new jobs for currently active sportspeople. Now they will have to think about a new career for some more recognizable faces in sports nowadays (Leo Messi, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, the Gasol Brothers and Conor McGregor).
