Student Instructions

Explore the work of French artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954). Painter, draftsman, and collagist, Matisse was a central actor in the Post-Impressionist art movement in France. He was noted as one of the greatest colorists of the 20th century, with his innovative use of contrasting pure colors, as opposed to the shading typical of earlier impressionist artists. The result of this are bright and often cheerful works, reflecting his goal that his art be “devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter.” 1.
