Create a Word Cloud

Grades: 3rd Grade
Subjects: English Language Arts, Reading, Character Building

Student Instructions

For this activity you will use your spelling or vocabulary words to create a word cloud. A word cloud is a collection of words that are formed in a fun cloud, or shape, using different sizes, fonts, and colors. 1. Click on the link in the example, or go to this site: https://www.abcya.com/games/word_clouds 2. In the game, click START. 3. Type all your words one time, making sure you spell them correctly. 4. Now, pick a few of your words and retype them over. When you type a word more than once, it makes that word stand out (larger) in the final word cloud. 5. Now, from the words you retyped over, pick a few from those, and type them again. These words will appear even bigger in your word cloud. 6. When you are ready, click CREATE in the top menu. This is where you word cloud will now appear. Have fun using the menu to change the colors, fonts, and even design of your word cloud. 7. Click add and take a screenshot and share your word cloud and share it in this activity. 8. Tap check to turn in your word cloud. Have fun!

Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity can be used for so much! Students can practice typing their spelling words, of course. They can type vocabulary words, making the more challenging words larger. Students can type in math, science, reading, and social studies vocabulary. Word clouds can be used for a check-in for SEL...students would type in their feelings and moods. Students could share about themselves by creating a word cloud that uses words that relate to them. So many ways to use word clouds!
