This activity is built around a third grade standard. Students will use paper with gridlines to help them find the area. Some of the questions will require students to create a rectangular shape based on a determined area given by the teacher. There is a challenge question as well. The students will look at the shape without gridlines to determine the area. This is a great activity for independent work, small group instruction, remediation, math rotations centers, or enrichment. Make sure to connect this activity to perimeter. Students should be able to use repeated addition, arrays, and/or the number of columns and rows to explain the area of their shape. I used these graphics while designing the activity.
