Teacher Notes (not visible to students)
This activity helps second graders practice spelling verbs with the suffix -ing and match those words to pictures of actions. It focuses on common patterns: just add -ing, drop a final e, or double the final consonant. Use the drag-and-drop as a quick check of correct spelling choices. For the partner activity prepare 4 small picture cards of actions (run, sit, make, hop) or have students draw them. High-quality open-ended responses show the student choosing a correct -ing spelling and explaining or showing the picture that matches. For example, a student who records a photo of a drawing and labels it "running" or says "I drew someone running because the base word is run and we double the n to make running" demonstrates correct understanding. Teachers can mark these as correct or incorrect when evaluating whether the student applied the rule correctly.
