Coin Bridge Building and Simple Interest

Grades: 7th Grade, 8th Grade
Subjects: STEAM, Math

Student Instructions

Gather as many coins as you can find and use them to build a bridge. How tall, wide, and strong can you make your bridge? The two building categories that you will need to build and record, there is also a financial category to record. 1. How tall can you make a bridge using only coins. (Take a picture or video, and include what you build it over.) 2. How strong can you make a bridge using only coins? (Take a picture or video of your bridge and how you test it and what you test it with.) 3. Add up the ‘cost’ of bridge 1 (total amount of change included in the bridge). Once you have that total figure the following: (remember I=prt) SHOW YOUR WORK 3a. The amount of interest you would earn if you invested that amount at 6% for 25 years. 3b. The total amount you world have at the end of that 25 years. 4. Add up the ‘cost’ of bridge number 2. If you had a savings account with a balance of $100.00 and you added this amount each year for ten years, in an account that paid simple interest of 4.5% per year, figure the yearly balance in the account, and total at the end of 10 years.
