This practice activity guides 4th graders through each RACES step with a brief passage, short response checks, and a full paragraph task. Use the Reading Fluency page to listen for phrasing and accuracy; then model how to pick sentences as evidence. For the partner activity, students need paper and pencil or a tablet to record a short video or photo. Circulate and prompt students to point to the sentence they will cite. High-quality answers will restate the question clearly, give a direct one-sentence answer, include a brief quoted or referenced piece of evidence (a short phrase or sentence from the passage), explain two short reasons why the evidence supports the answer, and finish with a short synthesis sentence that connects the answer to a bigger idea or personal connection. For grading open-ended paragraphs, look for: (1) clear restatement, (2) direct answer sentence, (3) accurate and relevant evidence from the passage, (4) explanation linking evidence to answer, and (5) a final synthesis or connecting sentence. Mark answers correct if they contain those five elements at a basic level.
