Sequence Tussle (Creating Linear Sequences - A Card Game for Two Players)

Grades: 6th Grade, 7th Grade, 8th Grade

Student Instructions

Click on the add button. Watch the video to see how to play the game. This is a game for two players so you will need to tag your opponent into your post at the end of the game. Click on the link to generate the cards to create your sequence of numbers. Rules: The first card tells you the number to multiply your first term by (red means negative integer; black means positive integer) The second card tells you the number to add or subtract to your first term (red means subtract; black means add). A King of any suit is worth 0, an Ace is worth 1, a Jack is 11 and a Queen is 12. Use the pen tool or the label tool to write or type your rule and the output numbers into the table. Then it's your opponents turn. They will use the pen tool or the label tool to write or type their rule and output numbers into the table. The winner of the round is the person who has the greatest total of terms. If either of the sequences has the same output value in it then that round is a draw. Play all 5 games and see who the overall winner is. Click check to add the post to your journal. Then click on the 3dots to select Edit People and tag in your opponent.

Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

You can eliminate the card generator and use a pack of cards if working in person. Students require knowledge of linear sequences, creating a direct rule and negative integers. This fits with the New Zealand Maths Curriculum - Stage 7 - Find and represent relationships in spatial and number patterns using General rules (for linear relationships) & Use a broad range of strategies for whole numbers and decimals with negative integers.
