Grades: 4th Grade, 3rd Grade, 2nd Grade
Subjects: STEAM, Science

Student Instructions

1. Collect some items that roll. Try to find objects made of different materials like glass, plastic, metal, card 2. Pick 3 different surfaces to test them on. For example, a tiled floor, a carpet, your bed. 3. Before you start, think about the following questions and make some predictions (informed guesses): * Which shape will roll the furthest? * On which surface will the items roll the smoothest? * Will they all roll in a straight line? * What other things do you think might happen? 4. Test each one on all 3 surfaces and make sure to write down what happened each time. 5. When you are done describe your learning in writing. Write about.... * The shape that rolled the furthest (say why you think that is) * The surface on which the items rolled the smoothest (say what it is about the surface that made things roll well) * Using describing words, help the reader to visualise how some objects rolled in different ways.
