Student Instructions

The movie version of Beethoven Lives Upstairs, is based on a book by the same name. In the book, the story is told through letters 10-year-old Christoph writes to his uncle Karl (changed to Kurt in the movie), and letters Karl writes back to his nephew. 1. Please read the 3 pages, taken from the book by tapping on the pdf file to the LEFT of these instructions. 2. Visit DSO kids to learn more about Beethoven and hear some of his music: https://www.dallassymphony.org/community-education/dso-kids/listen-watch/composers/ludwig-van-beethoven/ 3. Tap add and select note note 4. Write a letter to a family member pretending you have met Beethoven. Tell your family member things you have learned from the reading selections you have already explored, or do some extra research on your own to make your letter more detailed! You must write at least 5 facts or stories about Ludwig Van Beethoven. 4. Tap the check to turn in your pretend letter.

This activity can be used side by side with the video or book or alone. It is a good independent activity for students to do (perhaps if you have a sub), but they will need to have learned about Beethoven in advance or do some research on their own if they're comfortable using the internet safely. We did this activity after a few lessons on the life and music of Beethoven, including reading and listening to the Composer selections on https://www.mydso.com/dso-kids/learn-and-listen/composers .
