What are WORDS OF THE WISER? Words of the Wiser occurs when a character (who may be older and wiser) gives the main character serious advice that could be helpful in this moment in story and/or helpful throughout life. The wiser figure shares his/her wisdom or advice in an effort to help the main character with a problem or decision. What is the life lesson and how might it affect the main character? 1. Watch the animated short movie, BOUNDIN'. Who is the "wiser" character? Who is receiving the advice? What is the life lesson? How might this advice or information change or help the main character? 2. Write your response in the attached to this lesson. 3. Don't forget to explain your thoughts and thinking. 4. Remember to restate the questions and give specific examples and evidence from the video. Challenge: Can you find other examples of the signposts in the video? Please share.
This video has an example of Words of the Wiser! Words of the Wiser usually help a reader or viewer understand or name the theme. Use the video when teaching students the Notice and Note Signposts to help them become a more active reader. You could also use this lesson or the lesson ideas when teaching personal narratives or fiction writing. Encourage your students to include a character that provides advice or words of the wiser to the main character in their own writing.
