Native Species Are Our Neighbors

Grades: 6th Grade, 5th Grade, 7th Grade
Subjects: Science, Writing, Character Building

Student Instructions

A habitat in nature is a neighborhood, with many different species of plants and animals all living together. A native species in a habitat is a plant or animal that has adapted to work with all of the other species in their neighborhood to keep their natural home resilient, which means able to handle changes and stay healthy. You are also a neighbor in your local habitat! Let’s learn about some of the native species where you live, and think about how you can be a good neighbor by helping them thrive. 1. Watch the video about native and invasive species. 2. Then use this link: https://www.nwf.org/NativePlantFinder/Plants to search for native plants in your region. 3. Select a plant native to your region and use the note to write about how this plant helps other native species thrive to make the habitat more diverse and balanced, then share some ways that you could also be a great neighbor in your habitat by protecting a native animal, or encouraging more native plants where you live.
