This activity helps first graders hear and read the r-controlled vowel sound /or/ using a short Phonics Monsters video and interactive tasks. Use the video to model listening for the /or/ sound. Then guide students through the Think About It page and the three drag-and-drop practice questions. You'll need a device with camera and microphone so students can record and draw. Prepare simple word cards (store, pour, core, four, poor) for small-group practice if desired. For the open-ended Think About It responses, a high-quality answer will name at least one /or/ word heard in the video (for example, "store" or "pour") and include a clear question (for example, "Why does or make a different sound?"). For the Show It prompt, a strong response will show an original example of an /or/ word using a drawing or a short video that says the word clearly. Teachers can mark these as correct when the student both produces an /or/ word and demonstrates understanding (hearing or writing the /or/ pattern).
