Writing Dialogue: Punctuation and Said

Grades: 9th Grade, 8th Grade, 7th Grade
Subjects: Multilingual Learners, English Language Arts

Student Instructions

Review the attached dialogue rule pages. Level 1: The most basic level of punctuation for a conversation. You must know this to properly write dialogue. Level 2: Slightly more complex rules of dialogue; you will probably use these in a dialogue you write. Level 3: The most complex of the three; you may or may not use these in every dialogue you write. Then, correct the text that is provided in the template. There are mistakes that are from the first two levels of of punctuation. You are welcome to challenge yourself and add in Level 3 details. Finally, make a list of words to use instead of "said." Explain what emotion each word would cause the reader to feel. (Sometimes there is more than one emotion that will work.)
