Seasonal Changes and Shadow Length (MySci U3L3)

Grades: 5th Grade
Subjects: Science
Standards: Support an argument that differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from Earth. (3.3.5.A.)

Student Instructions

1. Look carefully at the images showing the Sun's path and the dog's shadows in winter and summer. 2. Answer questions about patterns you notice in the Sun's position and shadows. 3. Use the table of sunrise and sunset times to calculate daylight hours. 4. Complete the graph with the daylight hours for each month. 5. Describe the pattern of daylight hours and explain it using the images.

Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This lesson assessment helps students connect the Sun's path and Earth's movements to seasonal changes. Encourage students to observe the images closely and use critical thinking to answer questions. The table and graph activity reinforces data interpretation skills. The final question prompts students to synthesize their understanding of patterns and explanations. Use the answers to gauge student comprehension of Earth's rotation, orbit, and how these affect daylight and seasons.
